EVENT – The impact of trauma on students and the importance of supporting ourselves
- The impact of trauma on students, and the importance of supporting ourselves
- Date / Time: Thursday 5th December 9.30 a.m. to 12.00 p.m.
- Platform: Teams
This workshop is designed to look at how we can continue to deliver support to students whilst ensuring that we take time to support ourselves. We will do this through the following:
- Exploring the impact that trauma has on our students, particularly our Care Experience students and the positive impact you can have on their educational outcomes.
- Asking what does reflective practice mean and how can reflective practice help you to look after your own wellbeing and help you to develop trauma informed responses
- Offering helpful hints, tips and practice and exploring how to support teams and individuals to navigate challenging circumstances.
Contributors include: Niamh McCrossan – Hub for SUCCESS, Andree Carruthers – College Development Network, Sarah Sutherland – East Lothian Council, Lorna Jenkins and Margaret Forisky – West Lothian College.
Please be aware that as part of the event you will be asked to reflect on what trauma is and how you support people who have experienced trauma. Such conversations can be very difficult and we would advise that you might want to care for yourself by
- ensuring that you have time after the event to reflect and relax
- making yourself aware of what support is available at your college e.g. employer support line, access to support colleagues.
- ensuring, as far as is possible, that the rest of your day does not include intense one to one activities.
