We know that student funding can be a big concern, whether you’re thinking about returning to study, or are in the middle of a course.
If you are 25 or under and studying at HNC, HND, or undergraduate level, you may be eligible for the Care Experienced Student Bursary from SAAS. This is worth £8100 in 2018-19. It is a bursary, not a loan, so you will not have to repay it.*
Find all the information you need on the SAAS website:
If you are unsure whether you meet the criteria, take a look at this link for definitions of care experience:
If your circumstances are not described above, you may still be eligible to apply for support as a Care Experienced student.
If you are in any doubt about your status you should contact SAAS on 0300 555 0505.
Still unclear? Contact the Hub!
*In some circumstances, if you leave a course part-way through the year, there may be a small amount of the bursary to pay back, depending on the date you leave your course. If you are worried about this, or if you are in receipt of this bursary and thinking about withdrawing, contact the Hub for advice.
Individual university bursaries
In addition to the SAAS bursary, each individual university will offer its own financial support for care experienced students. This can often be applied to in addition to the SAAS bursary (so you could receive both in the same year). However, unlike the SAAS award, many of these bursaries have no upper age limit, so you can still apply for most of them if you are over 26 and not receiving SAAS’s care experienced bursary.
Please see links to our partners’ information pages to find out more about what each institution offers. If you’d like to find out more about a university not listed here, then get in touch with us and we can help you.

Regular SAAS funding
If you are 26 or over on the start date of your course, you are unfortunately not eligible for the Care Experienced Student bursary. However, you may very well still be eligible for SAAS’s package of tuition fee/loan/grant support. They have different packages for full-time and part-time study – follow the links to see what they offer, or get in touch with the Hub if you’d like us to help you explore your options.
